Jan 16 through 20, 1959

Jan 16: Left Cathy at Play School today, then Mrs. Wolfe, very nice mother of 5 year old Claudia, took Cathy home with her. Later Cathy went to Walter Blind's, our next-door neighbor while I took Cindy to violin lesson.

Jan 17: Cindy went to Bluebird Skating party. Joe, Steve, Jaynes, the Maiers boys and Dick went on hike in the rain.
Joe and Dick went to Gorst Power Plant. The others turned back. Later they (Cindy and Joe) went to Mrs. Torkelson's to exchange stamps. I bought a Beethoven record ($4) which none of us like.

Jan 18: I painted the upstairs steps today while Jim put on the molding in the upstairs hall. Now we are finished! What a job finishing that upstairs has been. When we moved in, there was old pink paper on all the walls and ceiling of all the rooms. The children went to Sunday School. Joe and Buddy Leaver collected paper for Boy Scout paper drive.

Jan 19: It was so mild today Cathy and I burned trash. Joe had his patrol meeting, a very quiet well-behaved one. Present were Eddie, Dick B., Dennis and Buddy. I took Cindy, Chi-Chi and Patsy to ensemble in the evening after school.

Jan 20: I took Cathy to school. Then she brought Marion, a 4 year old friend, home. They played until after 3 and got along beautifully. After school, Joe brought Bruce and Tommy home and Cindy played at Sherry's.

Jan 3 - 10, 1959

Jan 3: Joe left at 7:30 a.m. for 6 mile hike to Camp Sundown. Jim drove car up at noon to help out tonight. They are staying in the lodge overnight. I drove Kim home this p.m. Temperature last night 15 degrees.

Jan 4: Temperature 15 degrees again. Jim and Joe returned home at 4 p.m., Joe crabby and hungry. Both had wonderful time, look robust and healthy. Joe started scrambling eggs as soon as he was in the house. Cindy today discovered the joy of losing herself in a good book. She has been reading all day. Jim chopped wood most of the time for a fire at Lodge.

Jan 5: About four inches of snow fell last night. I took Cathy to a little hill in our back yard for some sledding. She has had such fun, eating and playing in the snow. Cindy used the new sled Santa gave the children to slide with the Jacobsen children in Westpark after school. Joe built a snow fort, Jim stayed home in bed with a cold.

Jan 6: Cathy started Play School, held in basement of Smith School, teachers Mrs. McKnight and Lois Haddon. Cathy loves school, is one of best liked children there. I observed today. Snow has almost all melted.

Jan 7: Mother and Dad came in today. They brought in the electric blanket they gave us for Christmas and hooked it up to guestroom bed. Cindy enjoyed Bluebird meeting at Sherry's.

Jan 8: The folks and I went grocery shopping. Dad fixed our new phonograph. It had some dust in the needle he cleaned out with a pin and toothbrush. It hadn't worked since before Christmas and we were so happy he fixed it. Cindy brought Sherry home after school. Cathy played at Walter's.

Jan 9: Took Cathy to Play School. Then visited in the afternoon with Shirley and Linda Bowen. Billy, next door neighbor five year old, came over and lost his heart to Cathy. He said, "May I kiss you?" She said, "You're handsome." They were so cute together. Took Cindy to violin lesson, then out to Sands.

Jan 10: We stayed at Sands overnight, then Jim and Joe returned to Bremerton to deliver pamphlets for Boy Scouts. They drove back at 2:30, then helped Dad get some logs out of his woods for a boat ramp. We played canasta, Joe, Cindy, Grandma and I.
